Artist Statement
I photograph to create images that imprint themselves upon your memory to preserve a situation exactly as I find it, so that it may be shown forever. What I capture is reality. My subjects must be socially relevant while also possessing beauty an aesthetic function.
In my work, I explore apparent trivialities and cultural phenomena (both within the Netherlands and abroad). I am particularly fascinated by those trivialities and cultural phenomena that are slowly fading away, becoming increasingly less common in society. What is the social significance of certain situations disappearing from our society? At what point, for instance, does something become “outdated”? Where does the tipping point lie? Through my work, I seek to determine, at least for myself, where that tipping point occurs.
Another major theme in my work is architecture. I use the cultural and social significance as well as the functionality of architecture as a backdrop for my subjects. In my view, society, human movement, and architecture are inextricably linked. A human being is nothing without a space in which to live or work; conversely, a space cannot truly “live” without the people connected to it.
Through my composition and execution, I amplify the aesthetic element I perceive within a subject. By categorizing and employing repetition, I immerse the viewer in a wealth of details and impressions. This clarifies the underlying message, which resurfaces in each individual image through recurring elements. By systematically developing my subjects much like Bernd and Hilla Becher did with their industrial typologies a clear, consistent thread emerges in my approach to presentation.
